Process Definition

The collect requirements process involves the process of compiling, documenting, and managing each of the stakeholder needs.  The objective might be to build a house, but each stakeholder within the construction process has a need or needs, and it is those needs the project manager must identify, document and manage if he/she expects to succeed.

Process Assessment

Important to this process is the partnering with stakeholders and allowing them to become part of the planning team.  It might be possible for a project manager or team lead to estimate what a stakeholder might need, but that type of risk can be mitigated by having each stakeholder present so they may provide insight into their actual needs.  Combining stakeholder needs with customer expectations makes it possible to develop a thorough and complete list of requirements.  By doing so, project management can categorize each requirement and manage the expectations of not only the customer but also each stakeholder.

ARTIFACTS

  1. Stakeholder Register: As an input to the collect requirements process, the stakeholder register provides valuable information of all those with a vested interest in the project and how each may impact the projects success.
  2. Personality Self Assessment Questionnaire and Survey: As a technique, self-assessment provides a means of understanding each team members personality.  This level of understanding helps identify compatible and adversarial personalities for the purposes of team cohesion.
  3. Project Manager Interview: As a technique, interviews provide insight and valuable lessons from more experienced professionals and should be an integral part of collecting project information concerning requirements.
