Process Definition

The define scope process is where the detailed description of the product, or service, is created.  As an input to this process, the requirements documentation created during the collection process will serve as a guideline for developing and defining the product or service.  Careful consideration is given to all requirements, but only those selected will use to create the project scope statement.  Figure 7 indicates the inputs, tools & techniques, and outputs of this process.

Process Assessment

Through the use of expert judgment, analysis, alternatives, and workshops, input data is defined by a narrative statement which supports the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).  This scope statement must indicate the reasoning behind the WBS structure and how it will support the project life cycle and ultimate deliverable.  The PMBOK Guide describes the scope statement as the description of the project scope, major deliverables, assumptions, and constraints.

ARTIFACTS

  1. Requirements Documentation: As an input PMGT 614 WBS 1.7 dealt with outlining the requirements for the development of a work statement of work.  This process supports and helps further define the work scope.
  2. Expert Judgement: This technique is an example of expert judgement.  During a PMGT 611 PM Crosstalk, students discussed emotional intelligence and how this trait, in a project manager, would help him/her deal with various personalities and situations.
  3. Kitchen Remodel Scope Statement: As an output, the Group Kitchen Remodel assignment for PMGT501 WBS 8.6a contains a scope statement and supports one of the output requirements for this process.
