Project initiation is the procedure that establishes a clear and well defined project scope, ascertains appropriate resources and identifies project stakeholders.

Here in the project manager set the direction, tone and foundation of the project.  Stakeholder are identified and committed in writing to the follow agreed upon guidelines and process execution procedures from the customer and other major stakeholders.

Key elements for a successful initiating process are leadership, organization and effective planning.  The Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK guide) addresses these in two knowledge areas. These are organized in the content using PMBOK guide numbering for ease of reference and organization with in the portfolio.

The Project Process Groups listed in the portfolio matrix and PMBOK guide are found on the left side of the screen. The Knowledge Areas for each selected Process Group are found to the right of the screen. Within each Knowledge Area page you will find the processes for the appropriate Knowledge Area. For example: on the 4. Project Integrations Management Knowledge area page you will view 4.1 Develop Project Charter. This format continues through out the Portfolio.

The Knowledge Areas and processes for the Initiating Process Group are:

  • 4.  Project Integration Management

    • 4.1 Develop Project Charter
  • 13. Project Stakeholder Management

    • 13.1 Identify Stakeholders
